Weekend Adventures: Duplin Winery

July 17, 2017

Duplin Winery is North Carolina’s oldest and largest operating winery located in Rosehill, NC. They are famous for their wonderfully sweet muscadine wines but sell a plethora of products. Such as jam, spreads, fudge, chocolate, etc. In 2016, they produced and sold about 1,069,896 gallons of wine ?

Pulling up the Duplin Winery’s front shop, I loved the look of the rustic farmhouse-esque setting! How cute, right? The twinkling lights and numerous plants made the store feel quaint and welcoming. But when you open the doors, you’re met with the hustle and bustle of TONS of people. Everybody wants to get a taste of Duplin! And I don’t blame them. (You should too.)

Inside, they sell about anything and everything. There were wine glasses, clothes, jewelry, home decor, post cards, picture frames and more! I somehow managed to leave with ONLY 3 glasses. Oh and of course, you can pick up a case (or five) of your favorite wine. Trust me, they have something for everyone.

We also took a tour of their production facility, however I am unable to show behind-the-scenes pictures. I got to learn more about how their wine is made, stored, and corked. It was amazing to see the tanks up close and personal! One thing I really love about Duplin is that they don’t let any part of their grapes go to waste! They recently started NutraGrape lotions, vitamins, and tea with their excess ingredients.

They also believe in a day of rest on Sunday following their religious beliefs. Which I think is simply reputable.

After the tour was the best part: wine tasting! The tasting room was beautifully decorated with vines and lights hung from the ceiling. While taking my seat, I was equipped with a wine glass, list of wines, crackers, and Duplin’s habanero dip. Since the wine is so sweet, they want you to be able to cleanse your palette between glasses for the best experience. I ended up just munching the whole time. Classy…

My favorite wines I tasted were Hatteras Red, Sangria Red and Carlos. (Can you tell I’m a red kind-of gal?) One thing you should know about Duplin’s wines is that they like their wines sweet! I was also pleased that Duplin was pretty generous with their pouring.

Duplin Winery and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans teamed up to produce a new wine, Pelican Red. Pelican Red is a medium sweet red wine that finishes with a burst of fruit. The wine was made “to celebrate their partnership with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and their dedication to the community.” My favorite part about this partnership is their Pelican Red Rush Sweeter, making the most delicious frozen alcoholic slush.

Duplin Winery is owned and operated by the Fussell brothers. I actually got to sit down with Johnathon Fussell and talk more about his place in the wine world. John and his brother, David, took over the family business in the early 2000’s. However, Duplin has been their whole lives —Wine practically runs through their veins!

I think it’s really special that both brothers are very involved in the day-to-day operations of Duplin Winery. The brothers make it a point to stop by their locations and get to know their customers. It’s easy to see that they love what they do and thus, that reflects their work. Their part in the winery creates a sense of family and commitment for winery guests.

By the time we got to lunch, I was slowly fading. Yet, I was still all smiles! There weren’t many gluten free options for me (which I was expecting) so I ordered a Ceaser salad. It’s pretty much impossible to mess up a Ceaser salad so I wasn’t surprised that it was good. For non-GF friends, they had a great range of food! Their sandwiches, pastas, and appetizers looked scrumdiddlyumptious. They also suggested the best wine pairing for your food with every order.

I happily sipped (gulped) some Duplin Red Sangria with my lunch. I was especially happy that the menu wasn’t as expensive as a cheap 22-year-old thought it would be ?

A few blocks away from the winery is Duplin’s wedding chapel. It provides rustic charm, enchantment, and the perfect place to host a wedding. Plus it’s located right at the actual Duplin vineyards. You can tie the knot right where the grapes are grown! It doesn’t get more magical than that.

Of course we had to stop and get some glamour shots by the trees ? I’m all about rompers this Summer! They are so easy and trendy! The one I wore on my visit is no longer available, but this tie-front romper in navy from Target comes close. My visit to Duplin Winery was a wonderful treat! Their sweet wine is delicious, employees are friendly, and location… beautiful.

Are you more of a red or white wine-o?

Have you ever been to Duplin Winery?

Red wine is my jam. I’ve only ever once visited a winery in my area and I could have unrolled a sleeping bag and lived there forever. It smelled so lovely. It houses my favourite red.
Looks like you all had a wonderful time and can I say that your outfit is absolutely adorable!
