The Many Benefits of Secondhand Shopping

November 19, 2018

When I was younger, you would never catch me in anything but Abercrombie or Hollister but now I couldn’t care less about designer brands! I absolutely love secondhand-shopping. As an adult, you spend so much money on bills, services, etc. that you don’t want to throw your money out the door. Since picking up secondhand-shopping, I have saved tons of money yet have MORE cute clothes.

There are so many benefits to hitting up your local Goodwill, Plato’s Closet, and Savers. Additionally, secondhand shopping isn’t just for clothes! You can also find accessories, furniture, and cute antiques. Here are just a few reasons you should leave the mall and start thrifting.

LOW PRICES

One of the most obvious is that you can find clothes for great prices! Additionally, various thrift stores throw sales on certain days – take an ADDITIONAL 50% off an already low-price piece of clothing. You can even find some designer brands for cheap. I’ve gotten a Kate Spade bag for less than 40$, after a little TLC it looked brand spanking new!

Keep in mind, some secondhand-shopping “boutiques” don’t particularly charge less because they consider the clothes vintage. So, if low prices is the main reason for your thrifting, research beforehand and stay away from the higher priced shops.

UNIQUE STYLES

I get compliments all the time on clothing pieces… and when they ask, “Where did you get it?”… 75% of the time, I say,”Goodwill!”. There are so many great finds on the racks of second-hand shops and the hunt for a great find is only part of the fun!

Your find will also be one-of-a-kind. Since it’s secondhand, the store probably only has one of it… making it unique. So, even though Sheryl likes your super cute purple and teal windbreaker, it’s not like she’ll be able to find it in stores! You’re sure to be a fashionista.

RECYCLE

Reduce, reuse, recycle has been implemented in our brains since we were young! So, why not use this mentality with clothes? Eventually, people grow out of their clothes or find a different style thus tossing what they no longer want. Unfortunately, when things get thrown out by hundreds of people, at around the same time, it creates an exponential amount of waste. Including clothes.

Secondhand shopping helps expand the lifespan of clothes. Instead of going into a landfill, these clothes are given a new life. You are making a large environmental impact for such a small price.

GO GREEN!

The more clothes we buy secondhand, the less support and money we give to an evil fashion industry. You wouldn’t believe the negative affect making clothes has on our world! Aside from landfills there’s an extensive amount of water waste, loss of habitat for animals, and pollution of natural resources. Ever thought about how much water it took to make your cotton t-shirt? How about three years worth of drinking water for one t-shirt! That’s a lot of water; 2,700 litres to be exact.

By committing to shopping secondhand, you are making a powerful statement.

Are you ready to start secondhand shopping? Some online thrift stores include Thred Up, ASOS Marketplace, Poshmark, and Maeven. This holiday season shop for family and friends secondhand and leave a smaller environmental footprint while saving money!
