Over the past year, I’ve been checking places off my bucket list. Even with a full-time job and a Journalist’s salary, I manage to travel a lot. Just recently, I’ve gone on two cruises, visited 8 different states, explored North Carolina more, taken numerous road trips, and am planning my next adventure. Traveling is SO important for a person to grow and learn. You gain more insight into yourself, different cultures, and relationships with every trip. However, looking at expenses can be discouraging, Thankfully, I’ve found ways to get around high prices and travel for cheaper. I’m slowly but surely making my way around the world.
Do you want to start tackling items on your bucket list? How can you afford to travel more and for less?
TIP: BOOK CHEAP FLIGHTS
I absolutely hate buying airline tickets!!! Ticket prices fluctuate day by day and there is no exact formula for when you should buy. It’s rumored that prices are cheapest on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and about 6 weeks out. You can shop around early, but you should never buy early. Nor should you ever wait until the week of to buy.
Use programs like Skyscanner, Hopper, and Google Flights to keep track of prices. Google Flights even alerts you when prices are predicted to change. Additionally, pack a carry-on, instead of checking-in luggage, to save on baggage costs.
If you’re planning on traveling a lot, think about signing up for a frequent flier program.
TIP: TRAVEL IN THE WINTER
You might think Winter is the best time for staying in, snuggling up under a warm blanket, and watching Netflix all day —but it’s also the best time to travel! Typically, airlines, hotels, and select tourist attractions will lower their rates during the Winter. Take advantage of the off-season and save some money.
A hotel room that’s over a hundred dollars during peak season may go for less than sixty during the off-season. The extra money could go towards a nice dinner or other fun activity. Plus, traveling in the Winter can make for some pretty scenery! Winter traveling is full of deals and steals.
TIP: TRAVEL WITH FRIENDS
Traveling with a group is WAY more fun and less expensive. Think about it: You’re able to split transportation and lodging between multiple people! Traveling with friends is also great because you’ll always have someone to take photos of you, you’ll leave with millions of inside jokes, and you’ll become closer than before.
And if you’re going on a road-trip, you can split up driving responsibility!
TIP: USE THE INTERNET
Before you book a trip, take a look at Airbnb and Groupon for deals. Groupon is typically known for selling local goods, but did you know Groupon has a section just for getaways?
Instead of booking a hotel, use Airbnb. Airbnb (I’d be surprised if you hadn’t heard of it yet) lets people rent out their houses short-term to travelers. Airbnb operates in roughly 35 000 cities and in 200 countries. Making your choices practically limitless.

TIP: DON’T RENT A CAR
Last time I was in Miami, we took an uber everywhere! Honestly, I was hesitant when Uber first popped up on the scene. But after using Uber numerous times, I’m a strong believer in this company. I’ll admit it… a lot of people use Uber to get them home safe after a long night at the bar… so I didn’t ever think to use Uber in the daytime. By using Uber, we saved SO much money not having to rent a car!! Uber isn’t only for your drunken stupors.
You can also explore other options besides driving. See what activities are in walking distance or ask if your hotel offers free shuttles.
If you’re thinking of traveling outside the United States. Here are the seven most affordable destinations to travel:
- Fiji
- Cambodia
- Portugal
- Peru
- China
- South Korea
- India

Wonderful tips, lady! I’m a big believer in using Google Flights as well! Happy Spring!
My son is king in our family for traveling for cheap. I will have to send this to him.
The internet is the best place to find and track travel deals…i’d be lost without it!
Nice tips! A caveat to winter travel is that it’s actually more expensive to travel to warmer climates during that time since it’s their peak season, which is sadly where I usually want to go in the winter 🙂 and hot ski spots are super expensive in the winter since it’s their peak season too. I agree with ditching the rental car in places where Uber and Lyft are available, especially if you’re not going to be using it that much. I just got back from New Orleans, LA and am off to Kaua’i Hawaii next! Can’t wait! Where are you off to next?
Groupon is an awesome tool that needs more praise for sure!

Great tips! I have found that it’s true flights are cheaper on Tuesday and Wednesday. I like to fly with southwest whenever possible because I can book flights when I see a good deal and change them later if needed or if prices go down.
These are such great tips! Getting good travel deals is always so exciting – I love using Groupon too! They have awesome deals on there!
These are great tips! I’ve also found that traveling to places at the end of summer (back-to-school time) is also a good time for deals. I recently found deals for round trip flights from Chicago to New York for ~$180 round trip!

Love the tips! Although I wouldn’t necessarily say traveling in the winter is the best time — basically travel whenever there aren’t a lot of school breaks xD That can be during the spring too! But also look at where the place you are going to, and when are their peak travel times? Like spring time is cheap for most places, but if you go to Japan in the spring it’ll be crazy expensive!

These are all such great tips! I’m traveling a lot this year and I can’t wait.
skyscanner is seriously such a lifesaver! I always use it to book a flight.
Great tips! I use Kayak to search for flights. I also try to plan my travel around when things are cheaper, as the low season can vary destination to destination. I also love Airbnb!
These are all fantastic tips! I agree that booking a flight on Tuesday or Wednesday is always cheaper.
These are great tips, and I am on the hunt for airfare right now! We are headed to Napa this fall and just booked our Airbnb house!
These are awesome tips! I haven’t tried AirBnB yet, I so need to.
Travel hacking is definitely the way to go for me. Let the credit card companies pay for your travel, as long as you have a decent credit score and dont owe anybody anything then you can get quite a few trips paid for over the years. Just keep upgrading then downgrading cards every 3 4 months, upgrading only when there is a promotion on! Sometimes just adding a second person onto the card gets you lots of points. Then you just remove them again, so easy!
My husband and I are wanting to visit Europe in the next year or so, so I’ve been looking at Google Flights almost every day to find the cheapest tickets. Great tips!
Loving these pieces of advice! I’m planning a few trips now and definitely appreciate all suggestions to make travel as cost effective as possible.
Isn’t That Charming.
Great tips! I love using Groupon to find great deals on travel, and Uber is definitely the way to go!
All these tips are right on! I totally agree with them all and booking tickets in advance is the key for sure.
