4 Easy Weekend Escapes from Raleigh (That Are Actually Worth the Drive)

Wilmington, N.C.

Sometimes you just need a change of scenery—and for me, that often means heading south to Wilmington. With my parents living in nearby Carolina Beach, it’s my go-to spot for a weekend recharge.

What I love about Wilmington is how it blends beach-town charm with walkable history and great seafood. You can spend your morning biking the trails at Carolina Beach State Park, grab lunch at a waterfront restaurant, and still have time to browse the cute shops downtown before sunset.

Asheville, North Carolina

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is one of my favorite weekend getaways (we even got engaged in Asheville!) — especially in the fall when the leaves start to turn and the mountain air gets crisp. It’s perfect for anyone who loves good food, local art, cozy bookstores, and outdoor adventure.

While a recent hurricane caused damage in the region, Asheville is very much open for visitors, and tourism plays a big role in helping the community rebuild. If you’re considering a trip, now’s actually a great time to go.

Charlotte, N.C.

Charlotte will always hold a special place in my heart. My best friend lived there for a few years, so I’d head down often for weekend visits. Of all the cities in North Carolina, it reminds me the most of Philly (where I grew up) — fast-paced, full of energy, and always something happening.

It’s the kind of place where you can catch a concert, eat at a buzzy new restaurant, explore an art museum, and still have time to unwind in a pretty park. And if you’re up for a little thrill? Carowinds amusement park is just a short drive away and makes for an epic day trip.

Durham, N.C.

Gosh, I love Durham! It’s artsy, modern, and packed with character — the kind of city where you can catch a baseball game, walk through a sculpture garden, eat incredible food, and see a Broadway-style show all in one weekend.

Just 30 minutes from Raleigh, Durham makes for an easy mini escape that feels like a getaway without all the packing and planning.
