4 Easy Weekend Escapes from Raleigh (That Are Actually Worth the Drive)

Wilmington, N.C.

Sometimes you just need a change of scenery—and for me, that often means heading south to Wilmington. With my parents living in nearby Carolina Beach, it’s my go-to spot for a weekend recharge.

What I love about Wilmington is how it blends beach-town charm with walkable history and great seafood. You can spend your morning biking the trails at Carolina Beach State Park, grab lunch at a waterfront restaurant, and still have time to browse the cute shops downtown before sunset.

Top things to do in Wilmington:

  • 🏖️ Beach day options: Lounge at Fort Fisher (a hidden gem with fewer crowds) or head to Wrightsville Beach for a livelier scene with restaurants and rentals.
  • 🛍️ Stroll through historic downtown: Explore cobblestone streets, quirky boutiques, and some of the best ice cream and coffee shops in the state.
  • 🌺 Visit Airlie Gardens: This 67-acre public garden is home to stunning blooms, walking paths, and live oaks draped in Spanish moss — it’s especially magical in spring and early summer.

💡 Distance from Raleigh: ~2 hrs 15 min
📍 Perfect for: Beach lovers, foodies, garden explorers

Asheville, North Carolina

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is one of my favorite weekend getaways (we even got engaged in Asheville!) — especially in the fall when the leaves start to turn and the mountain air gets crisp. It’s perfect for anyone who loves good food, local art, cozy bookstores, and outdoor adventure.

While a recent hurricane caused damage in the region, Asheville is very much open for visitors, and tourism plays a big role in helping the community rebuild. If you’re considering a trip, now’s actually a great time to go.

Top things to do in Asheville:

  • 🏨 Omni Grove Park Inn – Even if you’re not staying overnight, grab a drink and take in the view from their iconic sunset terrace.
  • 🏰 The Biltmore Estate – You can spend a whole day exploring the mansion, gardens, winery, and walking trails.
  • 📚 Battery Park Book Exchange – A dreamy spot where you can sip champagne while you browse used books in a cozy setting.
  • 🥾 Hiking – Whether you’re up for a casual walk or a more challenging climb, there’s no shortage of stunning trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

💡 Distance from Raleigh: ~4 hrs
📍 Perfect for: Mountain vibes, fall foliage, book lovers, and foodies

Charlotte, N.C.

Charlotte will always hold a special place in my heart. My best friend lived there for a few years, so I’d head down often for weekend visits. Of all the cities in North Carolina, it reminds me the most of Philly (where I grew up) — fast-paced, full of energy, and always something happening.

It’s the kind of place where you can catch a concert, eat at a buzzy new restaurant, explore an art museum, and still have time to unwind in a pretty park. And if you’re up for a little thrill? Carowinds amusement park is just a short drive away and makes for an epic day trip.

Top things to do in Charlotte:

  • 🎨 Visit the Mint Museum – A must-stop for art lovers with rotating exhibits and a cool gift shop.
  • 🌊 U.S. National Whitewater Center – Outdoor adventure lovers, this is your spot: whitewater rafting, zip lining, rock climbing, and more.
  • 🌳 Stroll through downtown parks – Romare Bearden Park and First Ward Park are both perfect for picnics or a casual afternoon walk.
  • 🥐 Grab a treat at Amélie’s French Bakery – A whimsical Charlotte staple with cozy vibes, incredible pastries, and quirky decor that makes you want to linger.

💡 Distance from Raleigh: ~2 hrs 45 min

Durham, N.C.

Gosh, I love Durham! It’s artsy, modern, and packed with character — the kind of city where you can catch a baseball game, walk through a sculpture garden, eat incredible food, and see a Broadway-style show all in one weekend.

Just 30 minutes from Raleigh, Durham makes for an easy mini escape that feels like a getaway without all the packing and planning.

Top things to do in Durham:

  • 🌸 Sarah P. Duke Gardens – These 55 acres of stunning blooms and quiet trails are perfect for a peaceful morning stroll.
  • 🏟️ Catch a Durham Bulls game – A classic summer night activity with great food, drinks, and skyline views.
  • 🎭 See a show at DPAC – The Durham Performing Arts Center brings in national tours, comedians, and big-name performers.
  • 🍽️ Grab food at Durham Food Hall – With vendors ranging from tacos to coffee to oysters, there’s something for everyone.
  • 🚶‍♀️ Explore the American Tobacco Campus – Converted warehouses filled with restaurants, shops, and public art installations — a great place to wander.
