Over the past year, I’ve been checking places off my bucket list. Even with a full-time job and a Journalist’s salary, I manage to travel a lot. Just recently, I’ve gone on two cruises, visited 8 different states, explored North Carolina more, taken numerous road trips, and am planning my next adventure. Traveling is SO important for a person to grow and learn. You gain more insight into yourself, different cultures, and relationships with every trip. However, looking at expenses can be discouraging, Thankfully, I’ve found ways to get around high prices and travel for cheaper. I’m slowly but surely making my way around the world.
Do you want to start tackling items on your bucket list? How can you afford to travel more and for less?
TIP: BOOK CHEAP FLIGHTS
I absolutely hate buying airline tickets!!! Ticket prices fluctuate day by day and there is no exact formula for when you should buy. It’s rumored that prices are cheapest on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and about 6 weeks out. You can shop around early, but you should never buy early. Nor should you ever wait until the week of to buy.
Use programs like Skyscanner, Hopper, and Google Flights to keep track of prices. Google Flights even alerts you when prices are predicted to change. Additionally, pack a carry-on, instead of checking-in luggage, to save on baggage costs.
If you’re planning on traveling a lot, think about signing up for a frequent flier program.
TIP: TRAVEL IN THE WINTER
You might think Winter is the best time for staying in, snuggling up under a warm blanket, and watching Netflix all day —but it’s also the best time to travel! Typically, airlines, hotels, and select tourist attractions will lower their rates during the Winter. Take advantage of the off-season and save some money.
A hotel room that’s over a hundred dollars during peak season may go for less than sixty during the off-season. The extra money could go towards a nice dinner or other fun activity. Plus, traveling in the Winter can make for some pretty scenery! Winter traveling is full of deals and steals.
TIP: TRAVEL WITH FRIENDS
Traveling with a group is WAY more fun and less expensive. Think about it: You’re able to split transportation and lodging between multiple people! Traveling with friends is also great because you’ll always have someone to take photos of you, you’ll leave with millions of inside jokes, and you’ll become closer than before.
And if you’re going on a road-trip, you can split up driving responsibility!
TIP: USE THE INTERNET
Before you book a trip, take a look at Airbnb and Groupon for deals. Groupon is typically known for selling local goods, but did you know Groupon has a section just for getaways?
Instead of booking a hotel, use Airbnb. Airbnb (I’d be surprised if you hadn’t heard of it yet) lets people rent out their houses short-term to travelers. Airbnb operates in roughly 35 000 cities and in 200 countries. Making your choices practically limitless.

TIP: DON’T RENT A CAR
Last time I was in Miami, we took an uber everywhere! Honestly, I was hesitant when Uber first popped up on the scene. But after using Uber numerous times, I’m a strong believer in this company. I’ll admit it… a lot of people use Uber to get them home safe after a long night at the bar… so I didn’t ever think to use Uber in the daytime. By using Uber, we saved SO much money not having to rent a car!! Uber isn’t only for your drunken stupors.
You can also explore other options besides driving. See what activities are in walking distance or ask if your hotel offers free shuttles.
